Matthew 1:18
‟Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”
Let me ask a question. If we lived in the time of this writing do you think any family member would have shared such knowledge? Of course not! It would have been a family scandal; even if she was a teenager. So why did the Apostles allow that tidbit of news to be announced? Prophecy? Yes, his birth was Promised to all the Jews and peoples.
Isaiah 7:14
‟Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Some people would think that I should start with the verse in Isaiah. But why? Yes, it was a forewarning, but most important it was a promise! I chose to list it at the bottom for the simple reason that it is a promise kept.
Luke 1:26
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
(27) To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
(34) Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
Another thing that grabs me is the term “virgin.” What is a virgin? She is one who has never had sex. Put plainly, yes, but that is what it is. A virgin is not a young woman as some translations put it. The verse says plainly that, “I know not a man?” How simple is that?
So, let us celebrate (not pray to her or worship) Mary being a virgin! Let your girls know, during this season, that the Lord found favour in Mary because she was pure. Let them know that Mary, the pure one, was blessed because her body nurtured the Baby in the womb. That virginity is a blessing. Teach your young men to favour the virgins, to show them respect and to protect them. Teach them to be “Joseph’s”.
Enjoyed reading this bible study and yes let us teach our sons to be like Josephs!
