November 6, Joshua 11:6

Joshua 11:6

‟And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”

After I read this, I had to leave it.  Why?  I had a feeling I knew what “hough” meant, but to be sure I looked it up.  It saddened me.  The cruelty of what was done to the horses.  So I asked God, how He could be so to one animal that He had made?  I even cried that these men were required to do so to innocent animals that were owned by the soldiers who joined together to wipe the children of Israel out.

My answer was that those animals belonged and carried the evil men to do evil against God’s children.  That is what is so important to understand here.  Evil begets evil.  By keeping the spoils of evil, then you are tempting yourself with evil.  Let say someone who you know gave you a fancy figurine.  I mean this figurine had jewels in it and represented an idol of long ago.  What would you do with it?  Would you display it?  Would you be tempted to brag about it?  You might just think it is still a tiny piece of porcelain, but is it really?  Over time what will that figurine mean to you?  We as Christians face no more trials then the children of Israel did back then or even now.  So if we let something in our life that at one time represented something of the flesh or world, even a sin, how strong are you to resist it’s pull?  So God is telling you to not even consider keeping it but to let it go or destroy it.

Joshua 11:6

‟And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”

Now, let us look at the character of the children of Israel.  We have already seen they whined, wanted what others had, lusted, cheated, and lied.  So step back and think: “what if those were my children?”.  Would you reward them with the spoils of the ones they just defeated in battle?  Would you think that they would accept the horses and chariots and not find something to complain about?  Would they not have been jealous over one chariot looking better than another?  Maybe one horse was stronger than another?  How would you divide it all up?

A good example is Halloween Night candy.  [Another tradition that is pagan and our churches are joining in by having trunk and treats, even with costumes that are not holy.]  Let us look at all that loot.  One of your children filled two pillow cases, and another got one.  Then a third child was picky and only wanted one type of candy.  You have three children and 4 pillow cases.  One barely filled to one bulging.  What do you do on the ride home?  Those little demons are fussing that it all isn’t fair.  One is laughing at the other that ‘ha-ha I got more than you’.  You can see where this can take you as a parent.  Do you make them divide it equal?  Do you give all the candy that little picky likes to him?  I mean he only got 4 candy bars total.  You have to make an adult decision.  So, what does God do?  He is one smart God, He tells them they can’t have any candy.  Proactive parenting is what He did.  By eliminating any possible anger ahead of time he kept his family calmer.   Now I know some parents help themselves to the kid’s loot.  And yes in war the Captains were known to do so with spoils, thus causing further rife in the ranks.  Oh to the parents that use the lie of too much candy for the little ones as the reason you pilfer from them, shame on you, what are you teaching your kids.  Your kids are too smart to not know you are ‘stealing’ from them.  Sin?

Most people would just cover the part in that verse about ‟Be not afraid”.  But after my prayer about guidance, I heard in my head that everybody has heard that discussed, and if we are close to the Lord then we already know this.

I know I did not add any other verses from the New Testament, but the message does not need any more to back it up.  Remember that evil begets evil, wrongs cause wrong, and sneaking fosters lying.
